8:37 [IM] -
Noticeably absent from the top 20 swims in the men’s field is reigning Ironman Brazil Champion, Oscar Galindez. He has been working on his swim this year and he must have missed a fast pair of legs to grab onto during the swim.

8:39 [IM] -
Oscar Galindez was just over 3 minutes behind the swim leader at the half way point of the swim.

8:41 [IM] -
At 20 Km into the bike we have Carla Moreno leading the women’s race with Hillary Biscay following her 3:10 back.

* FABIO CARVALHO (#20) at 5:20
* HENRIQUE OLIVEIRA (#26) at 6:21
* OSCAR GALINDEZ (#1) at 8:50

9:11 [IM] -
We are a little surprised that Carla Moreno is taking it out so hard on the bike. At the pre-race conference she claimed she was going to wait for the run to lay it down. The Ironman Brazil bike course suits the second placed women, Hillary Biscay… a down in the bars, grind a big gear kind of girl. Expect her to make a move on Moreno on the bike here soon.

9:24 [IM] -
At 50 Km into the bike we have Sanson Benjamin still in the lead with no one in close to him. Benjamin holds a French record for 800 meter freestyle swim. Looks like he can handle himself o the bike also.

9:28 [IM] - MEN: Bike - 50Km

* FABIO CARVALHO (#20) at 6:00
* HENRIQUE OLIVEIRA (#26) at 7:11

9:31 [IM] -
Sanson Benjamin has maintained his maintain his lead since his swim. The mover in the group, and of no surprise, is Oscar Galindez.

9:34 [IM] -
At 50 km into the bike Hillary Biscay has chewed back 35 seconds into Carla Moreno lead. She is now only 2:35 back of Moreno.

9:38 [IM] -
Female age grouper Kelly Lear-Kaul from the USA is currently in third place in the women’s race at 7:35 back of Moreno. She has actually gain a little time on Moreno since 20 km’s.

9:41 [IM] -
Fernanda Keller has just gone by our spotters at 50 km mark in fourth place. She is 11:44 behind the leader and has made some small gains in time since the 20 km splits.

10:10 [IM] -
Sanson Benjamin has just passed the 90 km’s marker on the bike. Splits of those following will be coming in soon. Thats about a 2:10 split for 90 km!

* IVAN JUNIOR (#18) at 8:05

10:29 [IM] -
Benjamin Sanson has been holding off the train of four behind him. The Frenchman has not given back any significant time in the past 40 km’s to anyone. A bit of a surprise right now is not seeing Sebastian Pedraza bridge up to the leaders yet.

10:41 [IM] -
Hillary Biscay is currently within 40 seconds of leader Carla Moreno at 90 km into the bike.

10:48 [IM] - WOMEN: Bike - 90 Km
Currently leading the women is CARLA MORENO (#52). Right behind her, however, are:

* FERNANDA KELLER (#51) at 7:56
* RITA CORREIA (#59) at 11:45

11:14 [IM] -
Around 100 km’s into the women’s race, Hillary Biscay has just taken the lead of the Ironman Brazil. Carla Moreno is following close behind. Reports from the course have Moreno telling a photographer on a motorcycle that she is not feeling well.

11:19 [IM] -
At the 110 km mark of the bike Biscay now holds a 2:20 lead over a faltering Carla Moreno. It appears that Moreno is hurting bad as she has fallen back over 2:00 in just 10 km’s.

11:31 [IM] - WOMEN: Bike 110 Km
Currently leading the women is HILLARY BISCAY (#67). Right behind her, however, are:
* CARLA MORENO (#52) at 2:20
* KELLY LEAR-KAUL (#244) at 7:45
* CARLOS CONCEIÇÃO (#373) at 13:20

* RAUL FURTADO (#11) at 9:30

11:37 [IM] -
Looks like Galindez has drop off the pace, losing over 4:00 in the past 20 km’s.

11:38 [IM] -
We have found Fernanda Keller… she is third place, 9:00 back from Biscay.

11:41 [IM] - We have Fernanda Keller's time difference wrong. We will get it at the next time check. Our spotter asures us she is third right now.

11:54 [IM] -
Ok, we have sorted out the top three of the women’s race.

WOMEN: Bike - 135 Km
In the lead is HILLARY BISCAY (#67), followed by:
* CARLA MORENO (#52) at 4:30
* FERNANDA KELLER (#51) at 7:27

11:59 [IM] -
Reports from our spotters are that Carla Moreno is starting to feel better. If Moreno can stay in touch with Biscay on the bike she can let her short course run background rip on the marathon. It is shaping up to be a great women’s race.

12:21 [IM] -
Looks like HILLARY BISCAY (#67) has put the hammer down as she continues to put additional time in on her pursuers.
* CARLA MORENO (#52) at 6:12 back with
* FERNANDA KELLER (#51) at 8:00,

12:27 [IM] -

Benjamin Sanson has just entered the transition. Unofficial calculations have him bike a 4:30 bike split! Not only can the Frenchman swim, he can also hammer on the bike!

BENJAMIN SANSON (#17) currently leads the men's field. Behind him:
* EDUARDO STURLA (#3) at 7:30
* RAUL FURTADO (#11) at 10:35
* OLAF SABATSCHUS (#7) at 18:59
* OSCAR GALINDEZ (#1) at 19:06

12:49 [IM] -
Previous Ironman Brazil Champions, Galindez and Sabatschus will have to pull off an amazing feat today for one of them win here in 2008.

12:58 [IM] -
The only marathon times we can find on our current leader Sanson, is a 3:20 at Ironman Canada in 2000. He comes from a swimming background and has 6 top 5 finishes in World Cup racing to his credit.

1:02 [IM] -
Fernanda Keller has clawed back another 15 seconds in the last 20 km’s and is now only 7:45 back of Biscay at 165 km’s.

1:14 [IM] - Sturla on the move: At 10 km’s into the run, Sturla is now only 2:28 behind race leader Benjamin Sanson. Surla has made up 5:00 in 10 km’s!

1:19 [IM] -
Hillary Biscay has just entered the transition and is looking good. Her unofficial bike split was 5:15.

1:24 [IM] -

1:32 [IM] -
Fernanda Keller has just exited the bike-run transition and has headed out on the run 8:55 back to American Hillary Biscay.

1:35 [IM] -
At 10 km of the run, three- time Ironman Brazil Champion Oscar Galindez is 19:00 back of race leader Sanson.

1:37 [IM] - This is the first IronmanLIVE event at which we have tested this new race coverage format. 2:19 [IM] -
At 25 km’s into the run, Eduardo Sturla has over taken the lead from Benjamin Sanson and now holds the lead.

2:24 [IM] -
Sturla has won Ironman Brazil in 2001. He also has a number of top 10 finishes here. He consistently runs around 3 hours here and if he can replicate that pace today… he will win this race.

2:26 [IM] - WOMEN: RUN:10KM
Currently leading the women is HILLARY BISCAY (#67). Right behind her, however, are:
* FERNANDA KELLER (#51) at 4:59

* OLAF SABATSCHUS (#7) at 13:00

2:55 [IM] -
It doesn’t appear anyone behind Sturla is making any gains on the 2001 Ironman Champion today. Sabatschus has been matching Sturla’s pace throughout the run but has been unable to gain any ground on the front runner. He still remains 13:00 in arrears.

3:01 [IM] - Keller in the lead: At 21 km’s on the run in the women’s race, Fernanda Keller has surged past Hillary Biscay for the lead. Keller has methodically ran a solid first half of the marathon and showed her patented patience and confidence in her running ability.
